Experience the joy and passion of West African culture through the study of its vibrant music, intricate poly-rhythms, call and response singing style, athletic dance steps and artful choreography.

Students learn traditional and contemporary dance steps from Guinea, West Africa while improving upon their fluidity, expanding on their movement vocabulary, deepening spacial and kinesthetic awareness, developing physical strength and endurance while emphasizing both artistic and technical growth.

Participants learn the integral connection between the music and the dance, how to recognize musical signals and improve upon moving together as a group while exploring traditional poly-rhythms and songs along with their cultural significance and history.

Using traditional, handmade African instruments and interactive games students will learn proper hand positions which will improve their focus, hand/eye coordination, clarity of notes, and sound projection while receiving a deeper understanding of the wealth and diversity of West African culture.

Arts and Academic Standards

  • Help students examine how a work of art reflects an artist’s environment and personal experience within a society or culture.
  • Teach students ways in which the arts serve a variety of personal, professional, practical, economic, community and cultural needs.
  • Help students compare and contrast past and present situations, people and events in neighborhoods and communities.

  • Help students develop an understanding of fractions as numbers.

The dance aspect teaches the value of physical fitness and the development of grace, style, stamina and core strength while improving muscle coordination, balance, flexibility and ability to move in time to the music while safely sharing the space with classmates. Traditional West African greetings, traditions and customs are discussed peaking kids’ interest in new cultures and customs, expanding their world views and increasing their global awareness.
