Jessilyn enjoys mural painting in schools because it gives students the opportunity to contribute to their school in a lasting way through a creative experience, while learning the elements of art and life skills such as working as a team. Students will be able to understand primary and secondary colors and know how to mix colors to apply to compositions. They will learn how to draw on a large scale for mural painting and other large images, while working together to create a mural or large format project.

Arts and Academic Standards

  • Help students create, present or perform a work of art that demonstrates an idea, mood or feeling using essential elements or organizational principles
  • Teach students ways in which the arts serve a variety of personal, professional, practical, economic, community and cultural needs
  • Help students reason with shapes and colors and their attributes
  • Help students learn biological species names while learning about composition, projection and color temperature
  • Teach students the elements and principles of art: Line, Shape, Form, Space, Color, Value, Texture, Balance, Movement, Rhythm, Contrast, Emphasis, Pattern, Unity, Scale/Proportion

Residency Mural Painting:

Students and teachers come together to integrate class curriculum into a mural design. While painting the mural together, we will learn elements of art, basic drawing and painting techniques and how to work together to make a large project that will be a piece of history and culture for the school. We will then have an assembly or school gathering at the end that celebrates the project completion and allows students to describe the mural and painting experience to other students and staff.
