Gallery At The Airport

The Gallery at the Airport, a project of Lane Arts Council from 1997 to 2009, was supported by the Eugene Airport and private donors. It was founded in 1994 by the Eugene Arts Foundation under the leadership of Randy Stender and Dottie Chase and transferred to LAC in 1997 when EAF merged with Oregon Community Foundation as AFWO.

During those 15 years, dozens of exhibits have exposed the work of hundreds of regional artists to millions of travelers and visitors.

Many thanks to Dena E. Brown who served as primary curator during most of those years.

In a letter in May 2009 the Eugene Airport said it had decided to eliminate funding support for the Gallery. At present several visual art groups are discussing a volunteer program of presenting exhibits. It is likely the UO Museum of Art will continue visual arts displays at Gallery beginning July 2009.

The Gallery At The Airport is located on the 2nd floor of the Eugene Municipal Airport's main terminal and, since 2001, can only be viewed by passengers carrying a valid boarding pass.

The Classics. March 18-June 13, 2009

The Classics. Though contemporary painters are free to express their creativity in a variety of styles many still enjoy the classic genres: still life, landscape and portraiture. For centuries these subjects comprised the core of an artist’s education requiring a focus on elements common to all great painting.

The Classics features work from painters who explore these traditional subjects with their characteristic styles; participating artists are Jill Atkin, Donna Beverly, Carolee Clark, Steve Cooley, Bets Cole, Jerry Dame, Don Gardner, Adam Grosowsky, Kris Ibach, Diane Lewis, Bev Partridge, Marilyn Stauber, Lavonne Tarbox-Crone, and John Van Dreal.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!   June 18- September 18, 2008

Five simple interlocking rings-blue, yellow, green, red, and black-are recognized the world over as the symbol of the Olympic Games. The new exhibit at the Gallery at the Airport, "Let the Games Begin," features artists' interpretations of these rings.

Guest curator, local artist Jud Turner, invited regional artists to participate in the exhibit, asking each to create a version of the rings in their own styles and media. Represented are textiles, ceramics, sculpture, collage, photography, and painting. The rings may be depicted in a traditional manner or be barely recognizable; expressive or controlled; small or large; horizontal or vertical-decisions all left to the artists. "Let the Games Begin" gives the viewer the opportunity to reconsider this traditional symbol.

Recycle, Reuse, Rethink, RE-ART! March 11 - June 5, 2008

Where living green is a way of life and everyday is Earth Day, it's natural Oregon artists would tap into the wealth of recycled materials available. In the spirit of reusing materials previously considered "disposable," this exhibit features regional artists who transform items such as broken windshield glass, discarded sewing needles, and old mailing envelopes into works of art.

And How! Celebrating Art and Soul in Contemporary Metal. November 12, 2007 - February 29, 2008.

Created in partnership with the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), AND HOW! is a juried exhibit of jewelry and metalwork by artists from SNAG members living in the Pacific Northwest. Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, and British Columbia are represented.

Among the 37 artists included, 15 are from the Willamette Valley or Eastern Oregon: Yuyen Chang, Lin Cook, Kathleen Frazer, Hannah Goldrich, Jane L. Guerber, Suzanne Linquist, Alvi Lufiani, W.L. Parrish, Nancy Piccioni, Brooke Stone, Christine L. Sundt, Deborah Taube, Anna Tucker, Ruth von Büren, and Dennis Werst.

In addition to displaying over 60 pieces of jewelry and sculpture, this exhibit introduces the viewer to a variety of materials and techniques used in their fabrication. Materials used range from gold and silver to recycled plastic and dried chili peppers. Techniques used are traditional and contemporary--from lost wax casting to industrial powder coating.
