Artist Residencies

A variety of Artist Residency projects are in full Spring in May 2009.

EcoArts begins its first four-week project in May at Creslane School, in Creswell, with four 5th grade classrooms guided by public artist Betsy Wolfston and supported by ecologist Tulsi Wallace. Funded in part by a generous grant from the Elizabeth S. Holden Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, EcoArts designs, plans and implements in-school, artist-led arts learning experiences that deepen students' and communities' understanding and knowledge of their surrounding environment. Six pilot projects are funded for 2009-2010. Two four-week projects are planned for Fall 2009: Oaklea Middle School (Junction City) and Latham (Cottage Grove).

LAC has developed in 2009 two pilot projects with artists working with teens:
o Carolyn Quinn is working with masks and performance at the Day Treatment and Reporting Center (DTRC), an outpatient alcohol and other drug program for youth, ages 13-17, involved in the juvenile justice program.
o Alseny Yansane is guiding students in West African drumming at Eugene School District's Opportunity Center, an alternative high school.

Our appreciation to the Phileo Foundation for underwriting two Artist Residencies this month:
o At Creslane in Creswell, a two-week Dance and Creative Movement Residency with Rachael Carnes.
o At Delight Valley in Cottage Grove, a two-week Clayart Residency with Andrea DiPalma.

o Storyteller, Kelly Terwilliger continues at Arts and Technology Academy, Kelly Thibodeaux is at Lacomb School in Lebanon with a Fiddle Music Residency, and Lane Arts Council is working with Oregon Festival Choirs at Crest Drive School.

Overview of the Artist Residency program

Professional visual and fine craft artists, performers, and writers work with students and teachers to create extended educational arts activities, teach new skills, develop creative thinking, and offer career insights. Quality arts instruction provides young people with authentic learning experiences that engage minds, hearts, and bodies.
