Creating an Engaging Classroom with a Game Design Mindset

Games have always been a part of how humans learn and hone their skills. All successful games, from Duck-Duck Goose to Call of Duty, have embedded within them the core principles of Game Design. In this training led by professional video game designer and teaching artist, Cullen Vance, explore how to incorporate the tricks and tools that game designers have utilized for hundreds of years into our classrooms to get students engaged and create memorable learning experiences that leave students changed, and hungry for more.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants know the 4 Principles of Game Design and their importance in the classroom.
  • Participants understand and know how to use “The Interest Line” to plan engaging and exciting classes.
  • Participants understand the basics of “Flow” and know how to create a “High-Flow” atmosphere.
  • Participants have generated a list of practical, creative and exciting ideas they can utilize in their classrooms this year.

About Cullen Vance

Cullen Vance is a professional video game designer, storyteller, musician, actor and teaching artist based in Eugene, OR. He has taught theatre for 6 years and has toured his workshops and performances across the west coast. His video game company, Cercle Games, has seen major success, including earning international recognition in Ludum Dare 42. He has a B.A. in Theatre Arts from California State University, Stanislaus.
