Project Description
In this residency, students will blend science and art together by using a local ecosystem in an animal art project. We will learn and practice basic art concepts, like composition and perspective, and create unique art that captures how animals interact with their ecosystem.
Final Product
Each student will create an outline of their selected animal, with the ecosystem inside the outline, which shows one of three aspects of how that animal is included within the ecosystem: the animal’s lifecycle, the way that animal changes their ecosystem, or a predator of that animal.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will learn about the importance of the ecosystem and explore science through artistic expression.
- Students will learn the unique ecological niche filled by their selected animal and will learn how to scale the animal and landscape together
- Students will practice varying composition and perspective.

Why I teach art:
I love sharing art with kids and seeing what they do with the skills they learn. I am especially excited about my Ecosystem Art Project because it blends science and art together, rather than keeping them apart. This provides kids with a wider range of learning and lets them explore both concepts simultaneously, while investigating the local ecosystems.
