Students at the Academy of Arts and Academics High School (A3) in Springfield and Lane Arts Council Teaching Artist Alejandro Sarmiento will begin painting the new mural honoring the past and present of the labor movement very soon! The design, to be painted on an exterior wall in downtown Springfield, has been a collaboration between Alejandro, the students at A3, and local labor union leaders. A reflection of the history of labor in Oregon and an imagining what the future of labor will look like, the final design is a visible recognition and reminder of the many roles labor continues to play in the community. The year long collaboration of artist, students, and community leaders has united art, learning, and the labor movement.

This mural will be a re-imagining of the “Jessie Bostelle Memorial Mural” by Alison McNair that was previously on the exterior of the Emerald Art Center.
