K-2: Shadow Puppetry with Noah McLain Philpot and Fooble the Dragon
Anything can become a puppet with the help of some dramatic lighting and a little creativity! Students will design and create their own shadow puppets using paper or cardboard and other craft supplies around the house. They will then learn how to create a shadow puppet studio using a simple light and nearby wall, piece of fabric, or bedsheet. This lesson explores performance and visual arts while introducing students to language arts concepts as they imagine stories to tell with their puppets. Supplies: paper, cardboard, pencil, binding material (tape, glue, or stapler), light; Optional: coloring supplies (markers, colored pencils, crayons), white fabric or light colored bed sheet
Utilizing the tools of theatrical expression, students will create and perform original characters. Students will learn to use their bodies, voices, minds, and emotions to express their ideas and original creations. This program is physically active, introduces students to literary concepts, and offers them opportunities to get silly through improvisational theatre!
